Prof.dr. Paul M.N. Werker
Dr. Aebele Mink van der Molen
It is a great pleasure to welcome you in Groningen for the 25th European Course of Plastic Surgery. This course has become an institute and in the past 25 years has travelled all over the UEMS-countries. It is the second time that it is organized here, the last time in 2003 by my predecessor prof. Jean-Philippe Nicolai.
This course is designed as a refresher course for plastic surgeons and a preparatory course for trainees and plastic surgeons who want to sit the EBOPRAS-exam. Speakers are national and international experts in their field and some are from neighboring specialties, reflecting the intimate relation our specialties have and how we aim to get the best outcome for our patients by combining expertise. In Groningen we are proud to have very close links and excellent collaboration with a wide variety of specialties.
Groningen is an old city and Hanze town and the home town of the more than 400 years old State University Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze Hogeschool). As a result, more than 25% of the inhabitants of the city is student, making it a vibrating city around the clock. The city offers a wide range of culture in museum, music and theatre halls and during festivals such as Noorderzon and Eurosonic.
The venue for the course is the University Medical Center of Groningen, one of the most beautiful hospitals in the country that harbors 1300 beds en employs more than 12,000 people. The central theme of the UMCG is “Healthy Ageing”, and spear heads of this medical center are: oncology, transplantation and acute care. All medical (sub-)specialties are present and all these specialties have training programs. All these programs are carefully monitored locally by the Supervisory Board of Postgraduate Medical Training (Central OpleidingsCommissie) en nationally by the Registration Board for Medical Specialists (Registratiecommissie Geneeskundige Specialismen).
The Department of Plastic Surgery employs 11 plastic surgeons, 8 trainees in Plastic Surgery and about 40 nurses, secretaries, planners, researchers and other supporters. The full spectrum of Plastic Surgery is provided, except craniofacial surgery and care for burn victims. Reconstructive surgery is what keeps us most busy and as such we facilitate the work of almost all other surgical specialties in the hospital. We are proud to have a professor of Esthetic Surgery in our team. Our most important research is in Dupuytren disease, reconstructive surgery and esthetic surgery.
I look forward to seeing you all in Groningen and wish you a very fruitful and instructive time and hope that you will not only be able to refresh your plastic surgical knowledge, but also renew old friendships and start new ones!
Best regards, also on behalf of my co-organizer Dr. Aebele Mink van der Molen,
